Call me biased, but I think the best pocket water filter is the Roving Blue Ozo-Pen. While it is not actually a filter, it will render questionable water safe to drink, and it will improve the taste and smell of water to boot. It does through the use of a new technology, "the Power of EO3", or electrolytic ozone - that uses the water itself to create dissolved ozone gas. Ozone is stronger than chlorine, and , according to the Water Quality Association, it is the strongest oxidizer available that can be safely used in water treatment. The neat thing about ozone is that it quickly reverts to oxygen, so no chemicals are used in the process, and no chemicals are left behind. On top of all that, it looks like an ordinary writing pen, so it looks right at home in your pocket, as opposed to a suck-thru filter type device.
